PREMIER LEAGUE weekend PREVIEW by David Walker (Friday, December 15, 2006)

Both Manchester United and Chelsea could pull further away from the pack while Arsenal and Liverpool should edge ahead of Portsmouth in the table this weekend writes David Walker.

Saturday 16 December

Charlton Athletic vs Liverpool
Fourth placed Liverpool have the chance to overtake Portsmouth if they can beat hapless Charlton at The Valley. Les Reed's arrival has not stopped the rot and even though the Addicks are off the bottom of the table, morale will be low following a 5-1 drubbing at Tottenham last weekend. Liverpool won their first away game of the season against Wigan Athletic a fortnight ago with a thumping 4-0 victory and netted the same amount against Fulham at Anfield last weekend. The already under-fire Reed could be in for a torrid afternoon.

Arsenal vs Portsmouth
Arsenal did Manchester United a favour last Sunday by holding Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge and could move above Portsmouth by beating them at the Emirates Stadium. Despite Pompey being three positions in the table and two points ahead of the Gunners, the bookmakers have marked Arsene Wenger's side as huge odds-on favourites. Not much value you may think, but the last two meetings in North London between the pair have seen Arsenal win 4-0 and 3-0 respectively.

Paddy Power)
AH: Arsenal - 1 1/2 @ 21/20 (
Gamebookers)
OU: Over 2.5 goals @ 9/10 (
Coral)

Newcastle United vs Watford
A battle between two struggling sides in which Newcastle have an entire team out injured while Watford seem content to stifle their opponents as they attempt to avoid the drop. The rock-bottom Hornets ground out a goalless draw at Reading last weekend and are likely to do the same against Newcastle. The Magpies are on a run of good form, winning their last three in a row but this could come to an end against the spoilers from Hertfordshire.

1x2:
Draw
@ 5/2 (Paddy Power)
AH: Watford + 3/4 @ 11/10 (Betinternet)
OU: Under 2.5 goals @ 7/10 (
Coral)

Reading vs Blackburn Rovers
Following a run of three successive wins Reading have had a little blip in their last two matches, losing at Newcastle and managing only a goalless draw at Watford. They have a chance to make amends against a Blackburn side hovering dangerously above the relegation zone and who have won just one of their last nine league games. Mark Hughes's side have managed to win just once on the road so far this season, away at Middlesbrough in September.
Walker's Word
1x2:
Reading @ 11/10 (
Gamebookers)
AH: Reading - 1/2 @ 9/8 (
Betfred)
OU: Under 2.5 goals @ 8/15 (
VCBet)

Wigan Athletic vs Sheffield United
Mid table Wigan can put some more distance between themselves and the drop zone with a victory against Sheffield United. A win against West Ham and draw against Middlesbrough, both on the road, will give the Latics confidence following a 4-0 home drubbing against Liverpool two weeks ago. The Blades will provide stern opposition and have clawed their way out of the relegation zone with two wins and a draw in their last three matches.
Walker's Word
1x2: Wigan @ 5/6 (
VCBet)
AH: Wigan - 1/2 @ 10/11 (
Betfred)
OU: Under 2.5 goals @ 4/6 (
VCBet)

Aston Villa vs Bolton Wanderers
This match has stalemate written all over it. Villa have been tough customers to beat and have won four and drawn three at home so far this season, their only defeat coming against Manchester City at the end of November. Bolton have not performed as well on their travels of late, losing by a 1-0 score in their last two away from home. The last three Premiership meetings at Villa Park have finished all square, 2-2, 1-1 and 1-1.
Walker's Word
1x2: Draw @ 11/5 (
Coral)
AH: Bolton + 1/4 @ 9/10 (
Betinternet)
OU: Under 2.5 goals @ 4/6 (
VCBet)

Sunday 17 December

Everton vs Chelsea
Chelsea find themselves in the unfamiliar territory of playing catch-up to leaders Manchester United this season but can earn all three points at Goodison Park. The last three meetings have all been close affairs, finishing 1-1 last season and 1-0 in Chelsea's favour the two seasons prior. Chelsea's brand of unexciting football will probably be enough to grind out a 1-0 or 2-0 victory.
Walker's Word
1x2: Chelsea @ 4/7 (
UK Betting)
AH: Chelsea - 1 1/2 @ 6/4 (
Gamebookers)
OU: Under 2.5 goals @ 4/6 (
VCBet)

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur
This weekend's previews have not relied much upon previous meetings but the match in the City of Manchester Stadium has stand-out past-season statistics. Galvanised by their 5-1 hammering of Charlton last weekend, Spurs travel to Manchester safe in the knowledge they won at City in four out of the last five meetings. Stuart Pearce's unbeaten home record could come to an end this Sunday.
Walker's Word
1x2:
Spurs @ 15/8 (
Betinternet)
AH: Spurs level ball @ 21/20 (
Betfred)
OU: Over 2.5 goals @ 6/5 (
VCBet)

West Ham United vs Manchester United
Manchester United have an excellent opportunity to maintain their position at the top of the Premiership, providing they don't become victims to West Ham's 'new manager' syndrome following the sacking of Alan Pardew. United have been breathtaking this season and have won 10 out of their last 11 Premiership matches including their last five on the road. In contrast, West Ham have lost their three and five out of their last six following their Bonfire Night victory over Arsenal.
Walker's Word
1x2:
Man Utd @ 4/9 (
Betfred)
AH: Man Utd - 1 1/2 @ 6/5 (
Gamebookers)
OU: Over 2.5 goals @ 9/10 (
VCBet)

Monday 18 December

Fulham vs Middlesbrough
Following two successive defeats without even a goal for consolation, Fulham will relish the visit of Middlesbrough to Craven Cottage. Gareth Southgate's Boro are without a win away from home all season and could see their relegation problems worsen on Monday night. Fulham have won four out of five meetings between their pair in West London with a 1-0 score appearing twice.
Walker's Word
1x2: Fulham @ 11/10 (
UK Betting)
AH: Fulham - 1/4 @ 7/8 (
Betinternet)
OU: Under 2.5 goals @ 3/4 (
Coral)
