FA Cup: Chelsea V Everton – Saturday, 19th February

Chelsea V Everton

Date & Kick-Off: Saturday, 19th February – 12:30 (GMT)
Competition: FA Cup; Fourth Round Replay
TV Coverage: ESPN

After Salomon Kalou of Chelsea cancelled out Louis Saha‘s opener for Everton, both sides knew a replay would then be required as a means to an end. And, one way or another, there will be a victorious party on Saturday, as should this second encounter end in the same manner as the original tie, or even the 1-1 draw the two played out earlier in the season at Stamford Bridge during a Premier League contest, then we may require Extra-Time and possibly penalties in order to determine who progresses into the Fifth Round to face Reading at home.

Chelsea are the favourites, both to win this encounter within the designated 90 minutes plus stoppage time and should this match stretch into another 30 minutes of Extra-Time. Considering they’ve been victorious on just one occasion in their last four games, are we surprised by the bookmakers’ decision to price the West London club as overwhelming favourites? Not in the slightest. Chelsea’s record against Everton is glorious, almost infallible, having suffered defeat at the hands of Everton just once in the past 27 meetings – and none in the previous 20 at Stamford Bridge.

Everton, though, do have this uncanny knack of raising their game in the crunch clashes, as they did at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season when earning a hard-fought but deserved 1-1 draw. Their recent form is abysmal, however, winning just one of their last six, but Chelsea have hit another flat spot as well, winning just one of their last four, so perhaps the Toffees aren’t the forlorn hope the bookies are making them out to be.

Chelsea are best-odds of 6/10 (1.60) with WilliamHill to compound Everton‘s woes, who incidentally are available at 11/2 (6.50) with Bet365 and most others firms. PaddyPower aren’t the only ones who go 3/1 (4.00) on the replay suffering the same fate as the original tie and finishing in stalemate.

Chelsea

Just about everyone now concedes that Chelsea, the reigning Barclay’s Premier League champions, will fail in their bid to defend their crown. In fact, apart from their blistering starts to the season, they’ve barely even put up a fight, which is basically how we would sum them up on Monday night, when they were extremely fortunate to leave Craven Cottage, home of their local rivals Fulham, with a share of the points. The point they did register, though, was all but the final nail in their Premiership coffin, so now it has all boiled down to the same old story; can Chelsea finally end their wait for that elusive UEFA Champions League?

Next week, on Tuesday, Chelsea will ignite their search for Europe’s most coveted prize, after coming so close three years ago in Moscow only to lose out in the final to arch rivals Manchester United, who incidentally are set to snatch their Barclay’s Premier League crown away from them. How fitting. Earlier this week, Frank Lampard confessed that the Champions League is the be all and end all for Chelsea now, although, not a word about how important defending their FA Cup is, a competition they’ve won in the previous two campaigns and what would now appear their most likelier source of silverware this season. Bodes well.

This winning the Champions League lark is becoming a bit of an obsession. Bringing in Fernando Torres for an insane amount – and that isn’t us claiming he wasn’t worth the £50million they shelled out for him, no, El Nino is doing that for us it would seem – was the clearest indication yet that Mr Abramovich desperately wants something new parade around the streets of Moscow. And, fortunately for the mega-rich Russian, Torres is cup-tied this weekend meaning the Spaniard, who also admitted he joined the Blues as so he could complete his ‘dream’ of winning the Champions League, will be fresh for Tuesday’s Last-16 First leg with the Kings of Denmark, FC Copenhagen.

In the meantime, Chelsea must contend with a meaningless FA Cup tie with Everton. I’m sure we’re exaggerating a little, we hope so anyway, and hopefully Carlo Ancelotti will prove me wrong by naming a ultra strong side for Saturday’s Fourth Round replay with an Everton side whom, while they are languishing near the relegation zone, are dangerous and are capable of punishing any lack of desire on Chelsea’s part.

Everton

The doom and gloom has well and truly descended around Merseyside, with Everton manager David Moyes conceding that the club are unfortunately slap-bang in the middle of a fight for survival. Judging by their atrocious display away at Bolton last time out, in which they were comfortably beaten 2-0 at The Reebok in what was arguably the poorest ever performance from an Everton side under Moyes’ watch, the Toffees are by no means too goo to go down and will do well to retain their status as a top-flight club.

It isn’t often you find yourself criticising an Everton side for their lack of passion and desire, two traits they normally have an abundance of, but that was the position we found ourselves in come the final whistle last Sunday. And at the same time as the whistle, sighs of relief could be heard around Merseyside as Everton were finally put out of their misery at The Reebok. And if there ever was rock-bottom, that dismal display in the pouring rain was the definition.

Everton need a ray of light to cling onto, and it isn’t the prospect of bolstering a threadbare squad in the summer, as funds, as the club keeps telling us, are limited. The FA Cup could actually be their lifeline, with progress surely the best, and cheapest remedy for what is an alarming decline. A positive outcome at Stamford Bridge, which basically means progressing into the Fifth Round by any means necessary – Extra-Time and Penalties may be required, would give the whole dressing room a massive lift ahead of what are more crucial league assignments which, should they fail in those, really would throw the club head first into a relegation dogfight.

To add insult to injury for David Moyes, in a very literal sense, Jack Rodwell, a player the club and so many in and around Goodison rate as a hot prospect, will miss the trip to Stamford Bridge through injury. Louis Saha, meanwhile, whom was absent at the The Reebok last weekend but has five goals in his last two appearances in the league, is doubtful. What does the guy have to do to land a break?

Match Prediction: Draw – 4.20 VictorChandler

We would be lying if we said Chelsea’s performance away at Fulham on Monday was more dire than Everton’s at Bolton 24 hours earlier, but there wasn’t an awful lot between the two. From an attacking perspective, Chelsea were useless and clueless. Meanwhile Everton were a sheer mess at the back, and seemingly deprived of any fighting spirit. So take you pick…

At home, you would naturally fancy Chelsea’s chances. Plus, their record against the Toffees is second to none. But even so, their odds flatter them, whereas Everton, albeit on the back of an uninspiring display at Bolton, have popped up with an out-of-this-world performance before and are definitely the way to go we feel, with small stakes of course. We need to see some of that famous Everton steel, the gritty determination which David Moyes has installed in a side which does have plenty of ability but wins matches more through their industry than their talent.

So against a Chelsea side who have shown next to zero talent in recent weeks, the Blues embarking on another dismal patch of form having won just one of their last four games, and with Carlo Ancelotti’s players under immense pressure from the club’s ever demanding owner, Roman Abramovich, to deliver the Champions League – Chelsea kicking off their knock-out adventure just three days after Saturday’s replay, hunger alone may clinch the Fifth Round berth up for grabs. If so, who would you rather have your money on? A Chelsea side with eyes which see well beyond winning the FA Cup, or Everton, a club who know full well they’re in a battle? I reckon the Toffees can ground out a stalemate before clinching the tie in Extra-Time.

Chelsea

With December already under way and the festive period on the horizon, you would have thought ever English club would at least have something to be merry about. In Chelsea’s case, they’re through to the UEFA Champions League without too many bumps and scrapes, receiving a favourable draw in the Third Round of the FA Cup and are still in a very prominent position in the table. However, Chelsea are all cheered out at the moment and, on the back of a retched run of form, will have to contend with arguably their toughest fixture period of the season, which ironically comes without the burden of having to fit domestic matters around European commitments.

Another piece of news which might, should in fact, bring a smile to the face of Carlo Ancelotti is the possibility of captain John Terry returning to the team-sheet for the first time since the middle of November, when Chelsea last won a league encounter fittingly. Terry has been suffering with some sort of nerve problem, so we’re told to believe, and has missed the Blues’ last three league encounters. In that time Chelsea have collected just one solitary point and have even seen their four-point lead at the summit not only cut down to size by title rivals Man Utd, they’ve been forced to play the role of catch up for the very first time this season. It will be interesting to see whether Ancelotti’s charges will buck up their ideas now that a carrot has been dangled in front of them in the form of a very consistent United side.

Overcoming such a lull in form is never easy and the Blues are currently enduring their worst period of league form by far, however they do at least have home comforts to fall back. Or do they? Saturday’s home meeting with Everton, a team which left Stamford Bridge with a point last term, will mark the first occasion that Chelsea have played at home in the league since their humbling by Sunderland last month, where the Black Cats stunned the Chelsea faithful, the entire country and the whole of Europe with their sublime 3-0 victory. Of course, they have contested a Champions League fixture at the Bridge ever since, although that didn’t go smoothly, either. Slovakian minnows MSK Zilina, whom hadn’t even registered a point beforehand, took a shock lead early in the first half before stumbling Chelsea fought back in a not entirely convincing or encouraging manner. Nor did it prove the springboard to Chelsea’s ticket out of their recent league slump.

Following on from their below par efforts in Europe, Chelsea were then back in action in the league aiming to avoid their third successive league defeat in something like six years. Newcastle were the hosts and when a calamitous piece of defending at the back for Chelsea gifted Andy Carroll his ninth league goal of the season, punters were beginning to embrace the worst once again. Fortunately, for under-fire manager Carlo Ancelotti in particular, the Blues did manage to mount a comeback, of sorts, with Kalou sparing his side’s blues, although not before he ensured he left Tyneside red-faced by missing an open goal in dying minutes which would have sealed a much-sought after win for Chelsea. As it is, the slump continues and even though everyone expects them to beat an Everton side who were emphatically beaten by West Brom at home last weekend, at the odds and with the form they are in, there just isn’t any value to be had whatsoever.

On the bright side, Ancelotti can at least hope to call on the services of combative midfielder Michael Essien, who returns from a three-match suspension and will help cover the large crack which has been left ever since Frank Lampard has been out of action. Reports suggest that the latter, Lampard, is back in training but probably won’t feature in a competitive first-team match until the ‘BIG ONE’, the date with league leaders Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in the last league game before Christmas. However, that fixture is sandwiched in between two excruciatingly capital derbies, with two trips to White Hart Lane and the Emirates to face Tottenham and Arsenal respectively to come before Chelsea can welcome in the new year, which at this rate couldn’t come soon enough.

Everton

Although wins over the defending champions have been at a premium, Everton are one of a select few sides in the Premier League who don’t have an horrifying record against Chelsea. Last season they took four points off the Blues and even had the audacity to score three at Stamford Bridge. On the basis of that performance, you’d feel the Toffees have a case and may even be of value. Then again, there will be tens of thousands out there who watched the Goodison Park massacre last weekend, where the Merseyside faithful endured one of the club’s most humiliating defeats in the Premier League… ever!

You have to trek back to May 2006 for the last time Everton were comprehensively beaten at Stamford Bridge in the league, and with their record so perky and Chelsea’s recent form so unspectacular, you would be foolish to write them off. But as we’ve already mentioned, Everton were thumped last Saturday and it remains to be seen what the response is from David Moyes’ men. Judging by Everton’s inability to escape dry spells and their heavy reliance on positive form and momentum, we very much doubt it will be one to write home about. 4-1 was the final score on a day where every Everton supporter are keen to forget, although the humiliating scoreline was the least of their worries. Mikel Arteta’s straight red card for reckless play means he’ll now miss Everton’s next three matches and in a season where the Toffees have been starved of creativity, it’s fair to say the Spaniard will sorely be missed.

There are at least two significant plus point for the fans and manager to sink their teeth into. The first being Tim Cahill’s rich goalscoring vein this season, with the Aussie scoring for the third league game in a row in last weekend’s defeat – Taking his league tally for the season to 8. And second, Everton are unbeaten in their previous five away matches. That’s all we could come up with on this front.

David Moyes is at least confident of having captain Phil Neville available for selection, even if he has lost some of his confidence in his team following the shambles of a performance against the Baggies a week ago. That was Everton’s second defeat in three matches but even more disconcerting is the fact their defence is leaking goals at an alarming rate. In their last three matches alone, Everton have shipped eight goals while on the road only Fulham have been kept at bay in front of goal by an Everton side which no longer boasts a resolute defence as a trait. In fact, noteworthy attributes are few and far between with this current crop, with scoring still very much an issue and form once again at rock-bottom. The one thing any underdog needs, and Everton are most definitely one of those, is momentum, any little bit will do, and yet the Toffees have zero of the stuff.

Match Prediction: Chelsea to WIN – 1.40 WilliamHill

At the odds, I do not see how Chelsea can be any value against an opponent who gave as good as they got at Stamford Bridge last season in an enthralling 3-3 draw. Of course, it almost goes without saying that Everton aren’t heading to London in tip-top condition mentally, baring the scars of a torrid season thus far as well as a horrifying result at home to West Brom last Saturday, but this Chelsea side are undoubtedly wilting under the pressure being applied by Manchester United. HOWEVER, perhaps now is the time to hop back on the Chelsea express?

With the Blues spending most of the current season at the top and holding a cushty points cushion of everyone, they haven’t had a visible aim or target to try and shoot down. Now they do, in the form of Manchester United, and a Chelsea side on a mission is a dangerous thought. Carlo Ancelotti is expected to draft Michael Essien back into the team, while Didier Drogba believes he’s improving with age, and not the other way around even though his form in front of goal has dipped rather alarmingly in recent weeks. Talk is cheap though, we’ve been treated to enough of the rubbish from Ancelotti, and no it’s time for the defending champions to do their talking on the pitch, by winning their first league match in five games.

It will be interesting to see how Carlo Ancelotti and Chelsea will respond from not only their disappointing result in midweek against APOEL, a team from Cyprus, not just the defeat last Saturday to Man City but more with the fact that their clear lead at the top has been cut down to just a slender one. The Blues’ are now just two points ahead of their nearest pursuers, Man Utd, and the pressure will be on the players to make an instant return to winning ways.

Chelsea were chugging along like a steam train before they met City, running down everyone in their wake. However, perhaps the 2-1 defeat in Manchester will have dented the confidence around the camp as Chelsea become just one of two sides this season to lose to the league newly crowned – Richest Club. Chelsea’s ego will have taken a big knock with the bitter blow but will that factor make them an even more dangerous side as Chelsea are now a club on the prowl, desperate to do anything they can to get back to winning ways.

Even with the confidence knock last weekend, Chelsea should be very confident of securing all three points at the expense of an Everton side who’ve been playing well below par all season and who do have to content with several injuries. Chelsea’s defence has been a very solid basis for their raw success in recent seasons and that has been the case, in parts, this season, with Chelsea boasting the best home defence by a huge distance. Petr Cech, who has had his fair amount of critics this season, none more so than last week, has conceding just the one goal at Stamford Bridge all season, seven fixtures, whilst Chelsea W-D-L ratio is breathtaking at 7-0-0. Even the likes of Liverpool (2-0) and Man Utd (1-0) have come unstuck at the Bridge this season, a venue where both the teams mentioned took points away from last season, so the improvements in player mentality is evident since Ancelotti’s arrival at the Chelsea helm.

Stamford Bridge was once the settings for four year unbeaten run for Chelsea and they look very good to go on another run. They’ve yet to taste defeat on home soil, or even come close for that matter, winning all seven home fixtures thus far. However, get ready to faint as their Goal Tally will leave you in awe; 20-1. Hull City are the only team this season to score at the Bridge and that came on the opening day of the season, perhaps when Chelsea were still rusty. However, Chelsea have whacked on the gloss and have been sublime ever since, failing to concede at home in over 540 minutes of play – Outstanding!

We would love to find any excuse as to oppose Chelsea but they look untouchable at present, even with the City defeat lurking over them. At home, Chelsea have been sublime and clinical, whilst their defence has been impenetrable. Everything points towards a comfortable Chelsea win and we won’t consider backing anything else on Saturday then another Chelsea cruise.

Everton

League Position: 15th

                                                    Recent League Form: WLLLD

Everton put their terrible away record to the test on Saturday in game they appear to have very little chance of getting much out of. Their form has been dreadful, they’ve struggled since the league kicked off and they still have to contend with fresh injuries on a weekly basis. Any other club in their situation would have crumbled by now and would be glaring at relegation. For now, at least, Everton are in safe water but that might not be the case if they fail to get anything out of this game and they could find themselves getting acquainted to life in the bottom three for at least another week with a pointless afternoon in London.

David Moyes really does have his work cut out with a depleted Everton squad at present. He has injuries to key players all over the shot and his injury hit squad were struck with yet more of the plague last week when news that both Dan Gosling and Sylvain Distin would be ruled out for a few weeks with hamstring problems. The pair will now miss a busy festive period for the club and now David Moyes, as if he wasn’t already, is down to the bare bones with his squad.

The show must go on, though, Everton haven’t been able to hide their injury flaws of late and are without a win the league for four games, with their very last success coming five games ago in a 2-1 win at West Ham. However, although it maybe the festive period, Everton haven’t had a lot to cheer about all season, with wins coming at a premium. The Toffee’s have managed just four wins in fifteen outings this season, with Everton falling to a mammoth seven defeats already. They’ve had some tough fixtures, with this game with Chelsea completing the set of top four fixtures, but they’ve faltered in the winnable games and, with half the squad missing, Everton must be dodged not only this weekend but in the near future so long as the injury list keeps growing.

Everton’s away record this season currently stands at 2-0-5, with the Toffee’s yet to draw an away fixture this season. However, they’ve fallen to defeat in two consecutive away outings, one being a formality at Old Trafford, losing 3-0 to Man Utd, but the other was an embarrassing 3-2 defeat at Hull City, a side they smashed 4-0 in the Carling Cup earlier on in the season. They’ve played OK at times, although they were extremely poor on Sunday despite picking up an undeserving point against Tottenham Hotspur (2-2). However, even that fine fight back, after previously going 2-0 down, doesn’t hide the fact that Everton are a club in crisis and, without the home crowd urging them forward that afternoon, we have no doubt that Everton wouldn’t have taken a point and they will only have a few thousand at Stamford Bridge, a far cry from the 20 odd they had at Goodison last Sunday.

Head-to-Head (Last 10):

Chelsea W: 5    Everton W: 0    Draw: 5

Chelsea do look in control on the h2h counter but don’t read too much into the figures. Chelsea may have won five of the last ten meetings but four of the previous five have all finished in a share of the spoils. What’s even more intriguing is that Chelsea have failed to beat Everton at Stamford Bridge in their last three attempts. With Everton frustrating the Blue side of London on their previous three visits.

Goals backers beware – The last five encounters between the two have all finished Under 2.5, while just one of the previous seven meetings at the Bridge have finished with three or more goals.

Match Verdict: Chelsea to WIN – 1.25 Bet365

Everton have fared extremely well in recent visits to London when tackling Chelsea but we expect their three match unbeaten run at the Bridge to crumble on Saturday as their injury hit squad prepare themselves for a probable beating. Everton fans can, however, take heart from their valiant record at Stamford Bridge in recent years but you have to judge this game on face value and Chelsea look far too strong in just about every department – quality of players, form, decent season, confidence, player of the season in Didier Drogba. Carlo Ancelotti’s team look irresistible at present and we would be surprised if they didn’t dish out a rout let alone not win.
