October 22nd, 2009 / Matt

TV Coverage: ESPN

Chelsea

League Position: 2nd

Recent Form: WWLWL

Chelsea suffered just their second setback of the season last weekend when they paid Aston Villa a visit. The ‘Blues’ beat Villa in last seasons clash at Villa Park but with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm, Chelsea failed to replicate that result when they went down valiant 2-1 losers. However, with that defeat the club has relinquished it’s stranglehold over the top spot and instead of just focusing on their results they will now have one eye on how others are performing, more importantly; Manchester United.

Fortunately for Chelsea they don’t have to endure another away trip and that will be welcomed with a sigh of relief after the club recorded back-to-back away defeats at the weekend. They now return to what has been a happy hunting ground for them thus far, with Chelsea one of several sides still boasting a 100% home record in the league. Four wins from four is just what you need to make your home venue formidable and feared around the land and Carlo Ancelotti’s side will have to handle all the expectations of them securing their fifth home win of the season, one that should come in a comfortable fashion you would feel.

After spending several season in the Italian league, a very defensive minded league it has to be said, Carlo Ancelotti has bags of experience in the defending department and this has reflected in Chelsea defensive record in the early part of the season. Although Chelsea have conceded eight in nine games, just one of those came at Stamford Bridge, with Terry’s back line keeping three consecutive shut-outs at home, recording clean sheets against Burnley, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, the latter certainly a creditable result.

Chelsea were in cruise control in midweek as they recorded their third successive win in the Champions League. They now sit cosily at the top of their respective group with nine points and a victory in any of their remaining three European fixtures would be enough to see them through to the next round. With that in mind, Carlo Ancelotti and his players can now concentrate more on attaining the right results back in the league, starting with all three points on Saturday. A victory over Blackburn is certainly needed as Chelsea aim to put their weekend defeat against Aston Villa firmly behind them.

Blackburn Rovers

League Position: 13th

Recent Form: WLWLW

Sam Allardyce will be honest in his heart of hearts and say he isn’t too optimistic about his side getting anything out of this tough away outing in London. Blackburn’s recent record at Stamford Bridge is dire, with no win in their previous six visits to the Bridge, whilst their away form has been dreadful so far, losing all three away fixtures to date, albeit against stiff opposition.

Defeats on the road to Sunderland (2-1), Everton (3-0) & Arsenal (6-2) mean Rovers are without a single away point this season but their most recent performance, despite suffering a heavy defeat, might be a sign of things to come from a Rovers side that do boast a recent win at home to bitter rivals Burnley. David Dunn’s return to fitness will be welcomed with a sigh of relief whilst the manager will be chuffed to bits that Dunn hasn’t taken long to find his form of old. Dunn scored in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Burnley and he stole the show in a match of the match performance.

Blackburn appear to have the perfect recipe for disaster as they travel to London to face a wounded Chelsea. Not only have Blackburn been conceding bucket loads on the road, conceding 11 away goals already, but they’ve also been struggling to find the opposing teams net, managing just 3 away goals thus far. Very few teams have the privilege of scoring at Stamford Bridge and with Sam Allardyce lacking attacking numbers, quality anyway, we can only see Blackburn firing blanks at the Bridge.

Head-to-Head (Last 10):

Chelsea W: 8 Blackburn Rovers W: 1 Draws: 1

Chelsea completely dominate the head-to-head between the two sides winning eight of the last ten meetings, with four of those coming at Stamford Bridge. In Chelsea’s four out of five victories at home they have scored 13 goals whilst only conceding two, with Blackburn failing to score in four of their last five trips to Chelsea. In fact, Blackburn haven’t score at Stamford Bridge in three consecutive visits.

Match Verdict:- Chelsea to WIN – 1.20 Bet365

It’s rare nowadays that Chelsea lose two on the bounce and we can’t see it happening at their spiritual home and against a side as poor as Blackburn have been on the road this season. Chelsea have a 100% winning record at Stamford Bridge this season while Blackburn have lost all three of their away games this term. If there was ever a banker a football then this may just be it but, from past experience, there is never a banker in football but we still expect Chelsea to stroll to victory.
