Burnley Vs Wigan Athletic Betting – Saturday 24th October

October 21st, 2009 / Matt

Kick-off: 15:00 GMT

Venue: Turf Moor

Burnley

League Position: 10th

Recent Form: LWLWL

Burnley will set out to defend their immaculate home record at Turf Moor as Roberto Martinez brings his Wigan side to town. Owen Coyle’s team are one of five sides still boasting a 100% record at home in the league and, considering the inconsistent nature of their opponents, Owen Coyle will be expecting to grasp hold of another set of three points as Burnley aim to make it five in five in front of their euphoric home support.

It’s lucky that Burnley have been doing the business on their own patch else they would be in serious trouble right now. Owen Coyle’s side simply cannot cut it when on their travels, losing five successive away fixtures, and it’s pretty clear that were Burnley to defy the odds and avoid the drop this season then it will largely be down to their home form. Victories over Manchester United (1-0), Everton (1-0), Sunderland (3-1) and Birmingham (2-1) has handed them 12 points from 12 at home and they will very optimistic of securing more this weekend.

Burnley struggle to assert themselves when on their travels but they don’t have those sort of problems when playing at home. They can create a handful of chances when rallied by the home fans and they haven’t been too shy in scoring, either. They have scored seven at home this term, conceding just two in the process, so far the perfect home formula to success it would seem. However, their previous two home games has seen them concede one in both so they will have to sharpen up at the back else they could get punished once again.

Wigan Athletic

League Position: 14th

Recent Form: LWLWD

If this was a home fixture then Roberto Martinez maybe confident of his side attaining a positive result. However, he and the players will have to face up to the fact that this is an away outing for them against a team who have been prolific at home. Compare that to Wigan’s away run of three straight defeats and there would appear to be only one winner. However, that’s never the case in football, especially where Wigan are concerned and they are more then capable of springing a surprise. The victories over both Aston Villa (0-2) & Chelsea (3-1) state this and could this be the day when Burnley lose their 100% home record?

Wigan boss, Roberto Martinez, will certainly be hoping so but to do so they will need to banish their recent away woes and win their first away game in four attempts after failing to get any points against Everton, Arsenal & Hull City. A positive for Martinez to take out of Wigan’s away performances this season will be the fact that they have scored in all but one of their four away outings. They couldn’t penetrate Arsenal’s back line but they do score at both Everton & Hull City, while they scored two at Aston Villa, their last away victory. However, on the same token, Wigan have been pretty shoddy in the defensive department. Their previous three away fixtures has seen them conceded eight goals so Roberto Martinez will need to tighten up Wigan’s back four before the visit to Burnley.

If this game was decided solely on form then Burnley wouldn’t certainly get the vote but Wigan, on their day, can be a right handful for any side and we would like to think that they will turn it on this weekend. We want a big performance from Martinez’s men as we would like to see Burnley’s perfect home record diminish, then we will see what Burnley are really made of.

Match Verdict:- Wigan Athletic to WIN – 3.0 StanJames

We know this will look a strange selection but we’re desperate to see Burnley’s 100% home record go. We want to see what Owen Coyle’s men are really made of and Wigan will certainly be a test for them, despite the Latic’s inconsistency issues. Wigan have the potential to cause an upset, we have seen this on several occasions already this season, and at the odds they look a very good value punt in a game that won’t attract to much betting attention.
