Under normal circumstances I wouldn't think twice about backing against Manchester United in the Community Shield. United have lost four of their last five matches in the traditional season curtain-raiser but have been in such deadly pre-season form it would be unwise to write them off before a ball has been kicked. United have beaten the likes of Juventus, Barcelona and Celtic during their tour of the USA but crashed 3-1 to Sporting Lisbon this week. However, Arsenal certainly lead the way in recent head-to-head encounters with United, have won at the Millennium Stadium three times in four matches since finals were moved to Cardiff in the 2000/01 season. United, on the other hand, have lost three out of three, including their recent Worthington Cup defeat by Liverpool. This is a very tough game to call, but our one advantage to making a profit is the Shield very rarely requires extra time, and indeed penalties, to determine the winner. Therefore I think backing against the draw is the sensible option. This is of course technically a friendly-cum-exhibition match, so we shall keep the stakes smaller than in Saturday's league games. |
