Spain didn’t look like world champions elect when losing to Switzerland three weeks ago, although this setback might have given them a wake-up call for the rest of the tournament. Since that Group H opening defeat, Vicente Del Bosque’s team have embarked on a winning run to defeat some tough opponents, most notably Portugal and Germany. The latter had put England and Argentina to the sword ahead of the semi-final in Durban, although the European champions were vastly superior to Die Mannschaft and that illustrates that the Spanish team are head and shoulders above any other team in the world right now. That includes the Netherlands, who weren’t altogether convincing when beating Uruguay in the semi-finals on Tuesday. The same could be said for the quarter final win over Brazil, although they have won six matches on the bounce and truly deserve to be in the final. The problem for the Dutch is whether to continue with the ‘safety-first’ approach that has enabled them to eventually win the game, especially as they could be playing into Spain’s hands by doing this. Bert van Marwijk must surely be looking for the likes of Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben to put the team’s opponents on the back foot from the early stages.

Even so, the Spain team have an excellent defence which has now kept three consecutive clean sheets in South Africa. Sergi Busquets and Xabi Alonso also provide excellent protection for this rearguard and that allows Xavi to control the midfield and Iniesta to provide some trickery. With David Villa proving so dangerous, La Furia Roja have to be the bet in the 2010 World Cup final.
